2021 Veggie Gardens

First "harvest". Actually I have picked some cherry tomatoes but they haven't made it out of the garden until now
Left a few peas to get fully ripe and see what happens. If they get fat and stay green they could still be the sugar-snap's instead of the snow-peas. I think one can be used for both, but not the other.
And that is what mulberries look like. great for juice, but the stems stay on them with a vengeance. they separate from the tree like you see them with a gentle nudge once they are ripe. You can put a tarp down and shake the tree when there's a lot. But cooking with them is shit unless you want to snip every stem. If you try to pull them off the berries will squish before the stem lets go.

I've had some 'flip on the heater' weeks, but only the one hard frost since I put everything out, and it was all small enough to move back in or cover. . Got lucky.

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to let those mulberrys get dark purple/black before they are ripe? Only other kind of mulberry I've seen is all white. Maybe different in your area.

Maw maw used them for making jam. Other than that we ate them as kids and got berry stained feet from running under the trees.

As the season goes, they get darker. I don't pick them. I shake the limbs and get what falls. That was the first time though, so it might have shaken loose some of the non-hackers.

On this part, that makes sense. it would go through a seive at some point to remove the stems and most of the seeds. Juice, syrup, etc. all good. But no "mulberry pie" unless you want to pull out the scizzors and play weed-trimming on a bowl of berries. That was what I meant by not cooking with them.

Tried them in stir-fry, and they were a little bitter. Might need the itty-bitty ones for that. The one I let go the peas were sweet right out of the pod, and shelled easy - Snow-peas.

And after a slow start I have zuchini. The first few flowers fell off without pollenating. I heard these were finicky about the soil, so was ready to chop them to make room.

Ind I just figured out the draw of the zuchini blossoms. They stay on until the thing is 4-5" long and stay healthy instead of dying off at the base. If you catch them right when they drop off you could fill a basket once they get going

To be clear, if I am gonna deep fry some stuff, flowers ain't gonna be it. There's a wierd fat pollen dick on the inside and a bit of salad. But you'd be eating whatever you stuff it with, and the breading. Fuck that, I have jalapenos for that

The rain we got last week gave my garden a nice boost! Everything has taken off. The beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes are all flowering too.

I got a little anal with the garden this year and I weed it every chance I get so I don’t have a ton of weeds to deal with.

The straw mulch I used has seeds or somehow just comes back from the dead for me.

I think I'm going to use chicken coop/goat pen pine shavings as mulch at the end of this season and hit 'em again in the early spring with fresh pine shavings as my mulch next year. Hopefully it'll weave tight enough to block out weeds

My zuchini got the axe. Yuuuuuuuuge plants, most of the flowers did nothing, 3 of the 8 fruit (off three plants) had some dying/yellowing thing going on.

Not worth the real estate. Cheap at the store... These are in a spaghetti sauce right now...

The normal cucumber is from the plant I started indoors. It will be decorating the little fence all the way around before long. Getting un-potted and rigging a raised bed type thing so it can get into the topsoil.

the three stubbie ones I just plucked to make a decent salad. I will have plent of cucumber and cherry tomato - and not much else in bulk.
The cukes are dominating the Beefsteak, but they didn't do well here last season either. A few early tomatoes then nothing. It'll be a good support for the cukes (big yellow flowers)

The Sweet 100's have hit the ceiling, and I'll train them up high just enough so they don't super-crop, then let them grow down again.

The "heatmaster" was a three-plant pot that was so grown together I couldn't separate them. It is my only real candidate for relocation and access to the soil.

But none of the peppers have done much. The Jap's will give me one a week or so (so far)
