Yes, gibrellic acid is a good alternative...but simply freezing the seeds and unfreezing is one of the best ways to get old seeds ready to pop.
I remember when my friend passed away we went to clean his house out and found all these old pot seeds in-between double alblum covers...they were probably from HS in the 80s.
We took and froze them and 95% of them popped and grew...they were these hazey type sativa's...we grew them outside but they were not finished by the end of oct here...that is the end of the growing season here in VA...we get lots of rain and Frost's then.
