Where are the older strains?

When I retired 11 years ago and got my OMMP card. I was hitting the dispensaries in the PDX area.
Did this for a year before I started growing my own. I quickly figured out what I liked.
SSH
SLH
Blue Dream
Chernobyl
Trainwreck
White Widow
ATF
Just to name a few, most of these were also available as clones thru a couple PDX shops at the time.

Now 10+ years later, what a change!
I'll stop in at the local shops here every now and again just to see what's up.
Found some BD and SLH a while back, bought an eighth of each.
How disappointed was I, an hour in on both I needed a nap....WTF.
I've grown both of these in the past with great results and excellent buzz.

Have all the cookie crosses and crazy mixes these days pushed out these strains?
Need to find some legit Chernobyl seeds, always at the top of my list.

The older strains have been Frankensteined into some poly hybrid mighty morphing cultivar.. not strain...we must all say cultivar now to be hip!

Find the breeders and contact them directly, like Mr.Nice, Soma ...stay away from seedbanks, trade with other breeders who have kept the stock alive.

As an old head its hard to accept the new old dirty bastardized strains of today, but if you spend the time looking they are still out there.

Also don't expect a dispensary to carry the olden golden they dont care about it, only 1 million % thc and the must have Bentley Bag Appel, and have a fruity/cake/ice cream so the youngers will scoop it up...see what I did there...scoop it up!

In the same boat as you know what I like and trying to pheotype memories of the past to current strains before the Cookies and Kush rabbit hole. We just grew a lot of bag seed and got lucky I guess. Most of the names we went with were the kind purple haze skunk indo ect. I see stuff now called a fropsickle and its wtf too me. I just want to know the base building blocks to keep things from drifting all over. NL5 S#_n ect. Its frustrating spending hours trying to get to the bottom of strains and not just throw cash around. Or then finding out all the butt pirate breeder shit after you drop some cash. That said with my research experience with and can vouch for Bohdi SkunkVa CSI Coastal Crikets&Cicadas Archive BredBy42. The Dutch seed banks stuck close to their roots and retained their names for the most part but that is changing due to the US nomenclatures of blending ebonics into the name that strain Olympics. If I haven't named a breeder or strain that doesn't mean I know of their body of work just not the experience with them or genetics.

That said to navigate some of this my preference for scouting out things in the early 80s and 90s align well to kush og strains and there are at least 7 or 8 to pick from. Then there is skunk diesel trainwreck ect. If you are a chucker and tinkerer then it's like which one of these recessive dominant genes do or don't want in my chuck wagon.

My advice is start with the breeder via podcasts and people reviewing strains. I found a wealth of knowledge listening to Kevin Jodrey, Kushman, Breeder Steve, The Ganjier and many others. I can respect the ones that create there little fiefdoms around there strains but find they tend to loose focus on the individual vs the Kardashians.

NSpecta at CSI Humbolt referred to himself as a crazy cat lady of mother plants. He has lots of the original cuts he has acquired from being "in the loop" and because he was good at keeping them. People trusted him as someone to backstop some of their keeper cuts. He has a lot of S1's from those as well as crosses he's made.

Getting S1 beans from a 1991 Chem cut isn't gonna be like growing the clone, but there is not going to be much variation in phenos. My goal has been to try and snag some of those heirloom strains, but just for me to smoke.

I wanted to know what the fuck Cali-O is all about. Got some UK Cheese as a freebie. Both of those are Skunk phenos which is crazy.

My stoner point I think is that snagging some S1's from the dude that has the original Mendo Purps isn't going to get you the clone. But damn close enough, and by the law of averages there may be one better than the mom in the pack.

Like @619KGB said, listening to breeders talk on podcasts can give you some insight. I listen more to their theory on breeding and the kind of high they are looking to grow. There are a lot that are more concerned with preservation than they are with crossing the next hype strain.

The cat lady 🤣🤣🤣 This is why I trust his sourcing of "the cuts". The S1s tighten up the genetics so they are great bookends for a cross you find. From what I heard him say the Urkle lines have the older funk Im into. I grew out one of the BSHWXUK Cheese and it really was a finicky cat. Probably an outdoor or a clone but from seed it was a monster. The BSHWXTrainwreck is a really easy to grow all those crosses are huge.

I heard the Cali O is great however keep in mind its turps are dominant. Other dominant turp strains the HP13 trainwreck that's not a bad thing just good to know.

But I am not breeding with them. I want to try all those "dominant terps" in a quest for knowledge - and another strain I might like. When someone says it is smells/tastes like Durban Poison I have no clue.
