Timer meltdown!

I had two exact same timers melt down / malfunction within three days of each other .... they were brand new snd have been in use now for six weeks today .... one had 1600 watts of hps and the other controlled 1000 hps and a fan

years ago I had one catch fire and I was lucky to be downstairs and put it out before house caught on fire ! Since then I always check them and have had a couple melt and quit working... this week two of them did melt /overheat to the point where dial quit spinning and lights were not shutting off - upon investigation each time realized dial unoperable and prongs were heated to point of melting plastic !!!

scary shit man !!!

keep close eye on your timers CB if using these crappy type !

what kind of timers are you guys using- what kind are less hazardous????

Scary stuff there man. It looks like you were below the rating. Obviously that doesn't matter though. All I can recommend is something name brand made for growing specifically. Those look like they are from lowes.

Personally used, Brinks Outdoor timers with a third prong ground. For years. No problems ever.

Some of the non grounded timers are good for less than 5amps [600w] of actual capacity and not the 1000w tungsten filament cutoff ... [ I think you found out the hard way, looks like nothing or no one was harmed though??]

I would look for heavy duty outdoor timers that can handle 2k watts and not the resitive load ratng which is for something like a heater.....

If your light is grounded, then your timer should be grounded as well. Aren’t most HID ballasts grounded?

That is scary stuff. I had one of those cheap oil filled radiator style heaters that wasnt grounded, and it did the same thing to a timer just like that. Always check your devices, timers, and coords to make sure things arent getting unusually hot.
