There is a programming language called Elixir that I rather like. There is a project called Nerves that allows you to write applications that will run on a Raspberry Pi. I have a Raspberry Pi B+. I attached a BME280 humidity and temperature sensor and wrote an app. It uses NTP to synchronize the time and has a web server so you can use a browser to see how the room is doing. It does a measurement every 3 minutes. The UI looks like this on an android tablet:
