Oder control

Not sure if there is thread about this subject but i would like some input. I flower in a closet that is 3x6.5x8. I have a 6" x 24" carbon filter covered by a prefilter that is ducted to a roof vent. My son was on the roof working yesterday and he said the smell was very strong. I have 430 cubic foot fan in front of the filter. To try to keep the heat down some i have been running it wide open. I am guessing i am pulling the air thru the filter to quick. I guess that the only way to tell would be to have some one on the roof sniffing while you turn it down. Mostly posting for anyone that has to have stealth mode around your house.

Are you using the fan with an enclosed light hood as well? If so, if you have the fan sucking from the light, some of the odor will get in around the glass of the hood and be non-filtered. The fan needs to be blowing through the light hood to be most effective.

If you are running just the filter (with LED’s), I would check to make sure all the ducting is sealed very well.

Failing that, maybe the charcoal in your filter is dead. Or your shit is really, really dank and Un-filterable.

That'd be one way to do it. Teamwork. Lol.
What's that filter rated at for airflow? And is it really humid air? Humidity decreases the effects of the carbon at high levels.
I completely agree you with ya @Old ST1R
Yep check those ducts and things for leaks. And also a yes if theyre extra stinky, they may need a filter upgrade to handle your high airflow.
The carbon removes odors based on the amount of time the air is in the carbon medium. So slowing the airflow down can help, so can adding more carbon. Either increases the amount of time the air is in the carbon. Carbon does have a limit as to how much it can adsorb before it is full and needs replacing though.
My nose is not very good but i think this round is very stinky (ECSD is pretty stinky)This is definitely a challenge. @Jesselikes2Grow i am not sure about the rating on the filter my room is only around 150 cubic feet. The filter is 6"x 24" which i thought would be more than enough for that size room and i replace it once a year. Maybe 10 months old right now. Humidity in the flower room is normal 45ish. Also @Old ST1R ducting is not running thru a hood and ducting is intact. I am making a trip to the big city today (hydro store)i will speak to them about the filter flow rate.

carbon is wore out. Those six inch, I use a four, but those six inch carbon filters are cheap enough to replace after a year or two. I think mine has a 2 yr warranty. $44 dollars don't seem very much for that kind of safety concern, just my opinion.

I see in the comments dude using a 400 or so cfm fan on his with no probs and works good. I use a 200 or so on a four inch scrubber, Ive never had a smell in two yrs, but when you shut it off, bout 10 minutes, whole trailer stinks up, lol Also looks like the eight inchers use around 600 cfm

It's not the room the filter needs sizing to, it's the fans airflow that matters for filter sizing.
Here's a link to a sizing chart that explains what I refer too.
According to it you need an 8 inch x 39 inch to achieve the scrubbing with the high airflow your running.
It's just a chart for their filters but according to it you'd have to go below 250 cfm for your filter to do its job.
Wow thanks @Jesselikes2Grow i did not know that. i have cut my flow in half which should be about right . But that brings my temps up in my room to about 81-82 degrees. A little warmer than i like but close to finishing ( 2 more weeks)

I have a 6 inch filter that is only 16 inches long. A cheapo. In my grow tent it really sucked at removing odor because i ran it full blast to get the heat out (LED and CMH with no air cooled hood in a 4 x 4 x 6.5).

About 4 stairs into the basement you could smell gangster weed for about 6 stairs.

I run the same fan (Vortex S model at 347 CFM) and the filter is rated at 304 CFM. I run it full blast. What I noticed is the filter actually works now (5.5 x 10 x 5 foot 11 = 325 cubic feet). The only weed you smell now are the buds i leave out to get nice for doobs.

I think it was going so fast through the filter before it could not scrub (4 x 4 x 6.5 is only 100 cubic feet).

Now that it is actually scrubbing 3 times the space at the same speed you cant smell anything outside. I was going to get a 6 x 30 because i thought it was necessary. Now I might get that just to get more airflow (cooler).

Myself I don't worry about smell outside. I do use carbon filters though but what I grow most time the carbon don't work.
There is a guy on my block that grow mj outside in his backyard every year. He is legal. So that's the reason I don't care as his stuff smells up the block which is ok by me.
I smoke joints outside all the time to.
People around me know im medical user ..another reason I don't care about smell outside.

Yeah definitely look at those cfm or m3/hr ratings. I find 4-6-8” shit to be very confusing. I got a 570m3/hr fan which is now running about 440m3/hr and my carbon filter is rated for 660m3/hr.

For about 10-12 months no smell at all, then i start pushing air thru it and that keeps it clean and safe for another 3-4 months. If your setup allows it that can save you one filter for every 2-3 filters. Which is nice. As everyone said you are probably pulling the air too fast. Thats it. Get a bigger filter next time and you can run full blast.

That is what made me not care too. I have a medical card. I dont care except to be slightly polite....cause I am Canadian and all :D

In about 4 weeks you are all going to smell weed all over up in the north because everyone who tokes is growing.

In about 4 to 6 weeks GMO cake will be reaking up the flower room and the filter wont stop it :D

my state just passed mmj and they are already trying to pass zoning laws for noise, smell, nuisance, etc. lmfao. I seen this also out in southern Oregon. Didn't take long to for Sheriff Winters to resign, and the original council members to be voted out. Ive advised some in the movement here that think lawsuits will work, best thing is just get the voters to out the old timers. When the law passed by 2/3 of voters, it won't take long. But every lil podunk town is trying to push the clubs and/or grow spots out as far as they can. lol. Im legal, but its habit for me to use a scrubber, etc, not only for smell but air movement also.

Welcome anytime mang. Happy to add to the convo
Okay @Jesselikes2Grow i have a better understanding of the air scrubbing now Those cfm ratings they post are very confusing . Seems like they should state the single pass cfm rating right next to total scrubbing cfm. I do not have room for a 39" filter so i am going with a 8x 24 after this grow to get a little closer to my needs.

What size filter is that one you have @gwheels that has the 304 cfm . Is that the single pass rating?

Capt C

Yea that is what i currently am running and mine is about 10 months old. That size filter 6x24 is rated at 250 cfm single pass rating. I was trying to pull 400 cfm thru the filter to help control temps. I would need a 8 x 39 to pull 4oo cfm which is wide open for my 6" inline fan.

I use phresh and after 6 months a stinky strain will get by it. I run ~100 cfm and a 6" inline filter. Couple foot long. Giant mofo. Weed stinks.
that's crazy, thanks for the info I wont' ever buy a phresh filter, lmfao. I haven't had smell in a 4x2x6 tent with a 100 cfm inline fan and use a 200 cfm squirell cage exhaust straight to the scrubber. Ive had that tent filled with 18 one gallon smarties of chems and og's and never had the smell escape, in all the time Ive used it and its a vivosun off amazon. lol. When zipped, it pulls the walls of the tent in just a hair. My tent never raises above 80 degrees and the probs I thought were heat related were too dry of air, with all that air movement. I started watering less more often and that took care of that. Obviously a humidity thing, but Id rather it be too dry than too wet. My inline is four inch and my exhaust is four inch. Surely its not the cheap cool tube reflector thats not even hooked up to the exhaust, I just exhaust the whole tent from the wall up high and didnt ever have temp probs, I realized, just the humidity probs and too dry I can live with or adjust my process.

I've tried others. I also use a mirv 13 on the intake as well as an inline before the carbon filter. I've tried many brands. Same same. I believe dust is coating the outside of the carbon particles. I've taken many apart. I do live where lots of pollen is around from trees etc. So I change it roughly every 6 months. Maybe I'll try the brand you use...

4x4 now. Expanding to 4x8. I'll have to try another filter. The ones I use are inline. Not many make them. Filter at 13 mirv. I'm sure some is getting past the filter somewhere. I've taped all interior seams but next expansion I'll try to seal it a bit better. Filters aren't very expensive and I live in the country. Soybeans and corn are my neighbors.
